Report: Angels close to acquiring Scott Kazmir in trade with Rays

This one is shocking on all sorts of levels. MLB.com is reporting that the Angels and Rays are close to a deal that would send Scott Kazmir to the Halos in exchange for two minor leaguers, pitcher Alexander Torres and third baseman Matthew Sweeney. The deal could be announced later today.

I'm shocked that Scott Kazmir would get this far down the waiver wire to be claimed by the Angels. That means the Red Sox did not put in a claim for Kazmir since they would have been higher on the waiver wire than Los Angeles of Anaheim. Boston is desperate for pitching help right now.

I'm also surprised because the Rays are only 3.5 games out of first place in the wild card race. Kazmir, though, has certainly underperformed in his Tampa Bay career and he is 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA this year, so I guess it makes sense to try to get something for him.
