MLB trade deadline buzz: Marlins, Yankees, Twins trying to make moves

- Jon Heyman says via Twitter that the Marlins are seriously considering a trade with the Nationals to land first baseman Nick Johnson. Florida is very much alive in the NL East, but perhaps more likely the wild card race. Acquiring Johnson would add a good hitter and a great glove.

- The trade talk between the Yankees and Mariners for pitcher Jarrod Washburn looks like it will go down to the wire. The Yankees are wisely unwilling to part with any of their top prospects and young major leaguers, which has slowed negotiations.

- The Twins have entered the race to acquire A's shortstop Orlando Cabrera, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.com. The teams began talking on Thursday and plan to go all the way until the Friday 4pm deadline on this one. The Red Sox are also among the teams interested in Cabrera, a member of their 2004 World Series team.

- The Mets and Indians have apparently spoken about Victor Martinez, but a deal seems unlikely since the Mets don't want to part with their somewhat overrated prospects. V-Mart would be a great fit for the Mets since they need a first baseman and their catchers are putrid, but it really doesn't make sense for New York to acquire anyone since the team is so far out of the division and wild card races.
