Flip Saunders agrees to become coach of Wizards

According to an NBA executive, Flip Saunders and the Wizards have agreed on a deal that will make him the next head coach of the Washington Wizards, replacing interim coach Ed Tapscott. An official announcement won't come until next week because the season isn't even over yet.

Saunders coached for many years in Minnesota before being lured to Detroit to replace Larry Brown. After a few seasons of going deep in the playoffs but not reaching the Finals, GM Joe Dumars gave Saunders the ax. He'd probably like to have him back now.

Being head coach of the Wizards probably isn't high on the wishlist of many coaches, but they will have a very high draft pick and a presumably healthy Gilbert Arenas, along with Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison next season.
