Bernie Williams to attend Yankee Stadium closing ceremonies

Former Yankees OF Bernie Williams told the New York Post yesterday that he plans to attend the pregame festivities Sunday, September 21st at Yankee Stadium's final game. Bernie hasn't been back to the Stadium since he went unsigned by the team after the 2006 season.

Here's a thought:

The Yankees will most likely retire Williams' number 51. No one has worn it since he left and Bernie was one of the games best outfielders during his tenure, also winning four World Series rings. Wouldn't it be special if they retired Bernie's number during those pregame ceremonies?

Perhaps it wouldn't do Bernie justice - most players get a day in their honor when their number is retired by the Yanks - but he played at this Yankee Stadium, so why not do it there and then move it across the street with the other numbers next year?

As Newsday's Alan Hahn says, just bloggin'.

I can't wait for next year (I have CC and Sheets thoughts in my future!)...But in all seriousness my wife and I are going next Sunday and sadly its likely the last game ever at Yankee Stadium. Kinda funny how this year has gone and if things end the way they appear we may finish 4th! Yuck! It will be great though to kick the snot out of Baltimore for the final game! We got tickets in the upper tier for less than $200 which wasnt too bad (if anyone else is interested?)
At least Hughes got the call up after the AAA playoffs, it would be a nice way to salvage his season with a couple good appearances heading into the offseason either as a part of Yankees future lure OR in a potential trade! LET'S GO YANKEES!
