Joe Torre used to get a lot of flack when he was Yankees manager for picking his own guys to be All-Star reserves, but Terry Francona takes the cake. (Okay, so the players voted him in. But without that analogy, this would have been a really short post.) On today's All-Star Selection Show on TBS, it was announced that Jason Varitek would join Joe Mauer and Dioner Navarro as catchers on the American League roster.
I can see having three catchers, since it's an exhibition game and all, but come on. No one outside of New England has thought Varitek has been any good the last four years. The guy is probably one of the most overrated players in the history of the game. Sure, he's a hell of a defensive player, but this year he's hitting a putrid .219 with 7 HR's and 27 RBI.
Varitek does lead the league, however, in most consecutive games played with an out-of-style haircut. Derek Jeter is a close second.
