The A's excel at trading pitchers

When the A's traded Rich Harden to the Cubs last week and said that it didn't mean they were going to start trading a bunch of guys, I thought they were lying. Now I'm pretty sure that they're lying after today sending Joe Blanton to the Phillies for three prospects.

The A's are six games behind Los Angeles in the AL West and are 4.5 out of the wild card. It makes you scratch your head a little bit after they've traded three starting pitchers in the last few weeks. It's a little early to give up on the season, but this is Oakland's shtick. They give up guys who are good, but aren't quite living up to their billing, and build on that for the future with solid prospects.

The Phils add to a rotation that needs help, especially with a surging Mets squad on their heels. Blanton has struggled this season but posted good numbers last year, and Philly fans are hoping he can return to that form.
